What is Winter Percussion? The Pleasant Grove High School Winter Percussion Ensemble is a competitive percussion group competing in the Northern California Band Association circuit. This past 2007-2008 school year, marked the beginning of this program. At our final competition, which took place at Las Plumas High School in Oroville on Saturday, April 12, the group took 5th place in a field of 13 competitors in the Novice Division; a very impressive result for a new team. This next year, our sites are set higher as we take on the challenging music of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Music teacher, percussion instructor, and active NCBA judge Brian Aguilar has arranged this music for our group. This past year, three of Mr. Aguilar’s shows (out of the 3 he had a role in) won championships in their division. While this doesn’t guarantee anything to us, we know we are getting high quality music. Our 2009 music focuses on two of the groups most popular pieces (to be announced). The program requires at least 20 members in order to fulfill the needs of the music effectively. We have parts for mallets, keyboards, timpani, guitar, bass guitar, chimes, auxiliary, and of course marching drums. So, who can join? The program welcomes individuals from any background, even those without previous musical experience; the only requirement is that you attend PGHS. We ask that if you join this group, you dedicate yourself fully, as losing members over the course of a season has devastating consequences. If you are interested in finding out more about the program and the commitment it entails, contact Jake Tuttle by email at jt223@saclink.csus.edu. A sample schedule for a "performance weekend" is shown in the next column.

COMPETITION DAY PROGRAM Finals, April 12, 2008
As a reminder, NO student will be allowed to leave this competition early. There are no exceptions. PARENTS: Help! We need drivers! Please let Jake know if you can drive.
We need help moving equipment on and off the floor for the competition. If you will be attending and can help, please come and meet with us prior to us moving to the gym.
Note: Parents who wish to watch other shows other than our performance are subject to the entrance fees the school imposes. These are fundraising events for each campus we visit so they make money any way they can. Admission is $10 for adults, $5.00 for students with their ID/seniors, and children under 5 are free. If you arrive in time to meet our group out in the parking lot, and you enter and exit the competition with the group, there is no charge; you are only charged if you stay to see other performers.

| General Guidelines for Competitions
1. Students are representative of PGHS and are expected to behave in a professional, courteous manner. We are guests on the campuses at which we compete.
2. Proper respect must be given to all groups. Any signs of unsportsmanlike conduct may result in penalties against our group, up to and including disqualification from the competition. We do not want to give PGHS a reputation for being a bad sport.
3. Students are NOT to leave the campus for any reason. Should a parent wish to take their son/daughter to lunch, they will need to sign their child out with the instructors prior to departing.
4. Absolutely no jewelry may be worn during the performance (including watches, rings, necklaces and bracelets) so that the ensemble may look uniform.
5. Have fun! It may be a long day, but it is truly amazing to see the various show concepts from novice level to open groups.
Comments and questions may be forwarded to Jake Tuttle. Thank you for your support this season. We are so proud of what the students have accomplished.
