Winter Percussion Ensemble

What is it?

The Pleasant Grove Winter Percussion Ensemble meets from late October to late March and learns a competitive marching, all-percussion piece (with exception to guitar and bass guitar) to compete against other schools in Northern California.  Last year, the group placed in the top 3 of their division all season and took home the championship title for the novice division at the final competition (see this show on YouTube).  In the upcoming 2010 season, the group looks to move up to the next division and compete at a whole new level.

What should I expect?

The instructional staff at PGHS expects you to make a full commitment to the ensemble; we do not rehearse as much as other NCBA groups and do our best to make the schedule accommodating to other activities.  This means that ever minute of rehearsal counts.  We meet twice per week for 3 hours each, with occasional Saturday rehearsals; and typically compete at 6 NCBA competitions.  Music is a very personal thing and you should expect to experience growth as both a musician and an individual.

Why should I join?

Being a part of the winterline means you are part of a family, part of a new tradition at Pleasant Grove.  Thanks to the efforts of the students over the last two years, the PGHS Winterline has developed an expectation in the NCBA for quality performances.  You will learn new skills, meet new people, develop lifelong friendships and memories, and experience music in a whole new way.  Being a part of the group has also brought students unique opportunities.  For instance, this past season, the group was asked to play on Good Day Sacramento using only sandpaper (and it looks like it will be a yearly tradition).

What do I need to do to join?

We welcome everyone from every background.  All we require is that you are a current student of Pleasant Grove High School, can maintain your academics, and will dedicate yourself to the ensemble.  You may have never played any music in your life, but if you have passion to learn, we'll help you get to that next level.  If you are interested in joining, please email Jake Tuttle at JT223@saclink.csus.edu.  We hope to see you in the winter for a new and exciting season.

Percussion Fundraiser
Magazine Subscriptions

The Winter Percussion Ensemble has a fundraiser that is very simple: magazine sales.  If you are thinking of subscribing to a magazine, or renewing an existing one, all you have to do is go to www.magfundraising.com/pghsdrumline, pick your magazines, and buy.  The drumline will receive 40% of the subscription!  The prices are very competitive and you can help out a good cause at the same time!  The drumline has huge fundraising goals for this year, so we are looking forward to this being a great step in the right direction.  Thank you for supporting the Winter Percussion Ensemble!

NCBA Championships 2010

at Foothill High School

Pleasanton, CA

March 27, 2010

After over five months of work, the season is heading to a close in the next week. Like any season, we have had our ups and our downs but we have come above it all to create a solid 2010 program. Thank you students for being so flexible with our schedule this year, for your patience and for your persistent dedication to the ensemble. Parents, we have seen more parents than ever volunteering and helping out this year; thank you so much for your help! Staff, we have really done some great things together, thanks for your contributions to making this group what it is today. Lastly, a big thank you to all of our supporters who have sewn costumes for us, cooked food for us, shopped for us, fundraised for us, found practice areas for us, and most of all who never stopped believing in the group. Whatever happens on the 27th, this has been a fantastic year for the program and I am so proud to have been on board for the journey.

What to bring:

-Winter Percussion T-shirt (this will be worn when not in costume/uniform)

-Winter Percussion Uniform –Be sure you have all elements of your costume (Black socks that cover your ankle, black shoes, uniform top and bottom). You’ll want to have something to change into after the

performance (i.e. your drumline t-shirt and pants, etc…).  Note, if you do not have your winter percussion t-shirt, you will be wearing your uniform top for the remainder of the day.

Note – Performers are admitted free, but parents will have to pay if they plan on watching shows other than ours.  I have spoken with their boosters and they are requesting that anyone who will be purchasing a wristband, please do so before our group goes on.  Those that plan on just helping us on and off, she said she would allow us 2-3 helpers.  The NCBA is in charge.  The charge for championships is $12 for GA, $8 for students/senior citizens and free for ages 5 and underWe need help moving equipment on and off of the floor for the competition.  If you will be attending the competition, please come and meet with us prior to us moving to the gym.

General Guidelines for Competitions

1.  Students are representative of Pleasant Grove High School and are expected to behave in a professional, courteous manner. We are guests on this campus and all campuses we will visit during our season.

2.  Proper respect must be given to all groups.  Any signs of unsportsmanlike conduct may result in penalties against our group, up to and including disqualification from the competition.  We do not want to give PGHS a reputation for being a bad sport.

3.  Students are NOT to leave the campus for any reason.  Should a parent wish to take their son/daughter to lunch, they will need to sign their child out with the instructors prior to departing.  We ask that no students be taken out to lunch for championships

4.  Absolutely no jewelry may be worn during the performance (including watches, rings, necklaces and bracelets) for uniformity purposes.

5.  Have fun!  It may be a long day, but it is truly amazing to see the various show concepts from novice level to open groups in these competitions.

Comments and questions may be forwarded to Jake Tuttle.  Thank you for your support this season. We are so proud of what the students have accomplished in just a few short months.
